Stakeholders in the Education industry on Thursday 25th January 2018 converged at the Music Recital, Federal College of Education, Abeokuta to deliberate on the new National Teacher Education Policy.

The one day sensitization programme which was convened at the stance of the Honourable Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu was well attended by the representatives of the seven states in the South West.

While presenting the policy, Mr Asubiojo who represented the Minister, noted that the policy was aimed at producing skilled and capable teachers that could produce students who would compete globally. He added that the process of arriving at the policy involved research, survey, interviews, focus group discussions and interactive sessions with stakeholders among others.

Earlier in his address, the Chairman, Dr Gbenga Sopeyin, noted that the quality of Teachers would determine the quality of Education children received. Dr Sopeyin who is also the Chairman of SUBEB Lagos State, added that the policy was highly essential because it guides the teacher on what to do. He further urged all stakeholders to take good advantage of the meeting in order to have a fruitful deliberation.

Presenting a paper entitled “A framework for monitoring the implementation of the National policy on Teacher Education” the Communication Coordinator of Teacher Development Programme, Mr Chinedu Anarado gave a brief on the policy framework, strategy development, Review of the implementation of the strategy against the aspiration of the policy, monitoring and evaluation framework, baseline measurement and target setting among other things.

At the end of the discuss, stakeholders in attendance resolved that, to produce committed teachers, only students who picked Education as most preferred choice should be considered for admission and bursary issued to students of Education. In addition, it was opined that Teacher Education should be under Federal Government of Nigeria and should no longer be under the concurrent list as well as involvement of stakeholders in accreditation exercise.
